At Abercorn our aims are to encourage children to develop an understanding of the past and its relevance to the present, and its impact on the world today.

Our classes are designed to promote curiosity and questioning in order to develop children’s investigative skills to develop their own theories and hypotheses. The study of history also plays a critical role in fostering relevant cross-curricular links with other subjects, to take history out of the classroom and bring the subject and their learning to life.

Specific Skills:

  • Empathy – Pupils must be helped to “stand outside themselves” and learn to “connect” with the experiences of people in the past. This can done through role play or use of appropriate source material.
  • Chronology – Pupils must be helped to understand how and why past events happened as they did and the link between cause and effect. Pupils must be encouraged to be able to place events, people and periods in the correct chronological order.
  • Change – Pupils will examine and explore the nature of change and its effects on society and history.
  • Role of the Individual – Using a range of examples, male and female, and from different ethnic, social and religious backgrounds, pupils will develop an understanding of the role individuals play in history.
  • Evidence - Pupils will be expected to develop an understanding of the nature of different kinds of evidence use examples from each. Pupils must be able to differentiate between Primary and Secondary evidence. Pupils should also be encouraged to question the validity and value of specific evidence in studying history.

Trips are a vital part of discovering the subject of History and all year groups make the most of the huge variety of opportunities available in and around London. Recent trips have included, the Imperial War Museum, The British Museum, The Golden Hinde, The National Army Museum, Archaeology on the Thames and Hampton Court. Further afield, visits have included Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the battlefields of the Somme.
