At Abercorn School, we believe language is at the heart of student learning.

Fundamental to thinking, communicating and self-expression, language permeates all aspects of the curriculum. We believe that the opportunity to learn more than one language can enhance cognitive development, at the same time developing cultural identity, emotional stability, a global focus and fostering international-mindedness.

At Abercorn, French is the primary second language offered and lessons are conducted for the most part in French to aid fluency and comprehension.

In the Early Years the emphasis lies on communication. Pupils learn contextually through stories, utilising familiar characters, puppets and props, and through drama games, role plays and songs. In Years 3 to 8 pupils are encouraged to develop their confidence and are given opportunities to practise the four main skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
