At Abercorn School we aim to encourage our children to assimilate scientific knowledge and skills through active learning.

As such, there is a strong emphasis on investigative work from an early age to ensure that all pupils will develop into competent scientists who are able to confidently conduct an investigation through questioning, planning, observing, analysing and reasoning, becoming confident learners and critical thinkers.

They also gain a real sense of appreciation for the natural world and learn to be innovative in solving problems, which are key attributes to have in an everchanging world.

Trips including The Science Museum and the Natural History Museum which help to consolidate and enhance practical work in the classroom. ICT is actively integrated into the lessons as we realise the importance of our students developing these skills in order to flourish in a technologically driven world. Chrome and netbooks are frequently used in research based tasks, generating spreadsheets & graphs and in writing up investigations.

The Science department stimulates interest through fast paced and interactive lessons that are student focused. There is also progression in the complexity of scientific enquiry skills gained from making simple predictions and collecting data in the younger years to identifying more specific trends, anomalous results and evaluating the reliability of results in the upper year groups. Lessons are always planned that are relevant to our students with a strong link between the principle and its application in the outside world.

Our syllabus is designed with ethical issues in mind such as the need for renewable energy technology and the importance of sustainable development and conservation.

Pupils are well motivated and co-operative, keen to be involved, and work with a good level of concentration in lessons.
