Drama is an essential part of life at Abercorn and a subject through which we seek to enrich and enhance the life of the school and its pupils.
From a child’s earliest years at Abercorn, Drama productions are part of their on-going school life. In the Nursery, Pre-Reception and Reception all the pupils are involved in wonderful Christmas and summer shows which are always a magical experience with plenty of vibrant performances!
At TOGS, children are all given the opportunity to perform in an annual production in front of parents and staff. There is also an after school Drama club on offer which makes for a rich and rewarding experience in the younger years.
At Portland Place all of the pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 have a timetabled drama lesson each week which covers key techniques including improvisation, character work, mime, storytelling, speech and movement. Pupils are invited to draw on their own experiences of the world to help them create a world of make believe.
Every spring the pupils in Years 5 and 6 are invited to audition for a musical production by Abercorn’s Director of Music, Mr Hopwood. After two terms of rehearsing with a choreographer and orchestra the Year 5 and 6 pupils perform the musical at the end of the summer term in the impressive theatre at Rudolph Steiner House near Baker Street.
Each autumn all the pupils in Year 7 and 8 take part in a senior play which is performed in front of friends and parents in one of the signature rooms at 38 Portland Place. This provides a great opportunity for the pupils to enjoy working together and to collaborate successfully before the end of term.
It is our hope that children leave Abercorn as confident speakers, and passionate about the potential for drama to transform whether as actors or as audience.
